Barcelona could sell key midfielder due to constant injuries: report
Barcelona midfielder Pedri’s future hangs in the balance as the Catalan club reportedly considers selling him if he fails to regain full fitness by next season, according to Spanish news outlet Diario AS.
Pedri has been plagued by injuries for nearly two years, experiencing three relapses in the rectal femoris of his right thigh this season alone. These persistent fitness issues have taken a toll on both his physical and mental well-being, resulting in a noticeable decline in his on-field performance since his return from his latest injury.
The club, under the leadership of Xavi Hernandez, is facing a crucial decision regarding Pedri's future. Despite being a key player for Xavi, who is expected to continue with Barcelona despite announcing his departure at the end of the season, Pedri's inability to maintain fitness may force the club to consider offloading him, especially if Frenkie de Jong departs in the summer.
Earlier reports confirmed Xavi's decision to leave Barcelona at the end of the season, after a distinguished 17-year career with the club, during which he made 767 appearances and secured 25 trophies, including four Champions League titles. Despite leading Barcelona to the La Liga title last season, the team's underwhelming performance this season has heightened scrutiny on Xavi.
Sources revealed to Reuters that Xavi was assured the club would still pursue top-level players despite its financial difficulties, signaling a commitment to maintain competitiveness despite ongoing challenges.
